Introduction

The subject for this blog has been cooking on the inside of me for some time now. Every time I read "A Christmas Carol", and when I have read books like "Nickel and Dimed" and other books about the poor, I find myself trying to reconcile the viewpoint of the Republican Party and that of historical Christianity. I haven't been able to put it reconcile the two, but I'm going to try to figure it out, and thats what this blog is for.

Let me tell you a little bit about myself. I was raised a conservative Christian, and even went to seminary for a couple of years. My folks were both rich and poor. Their prosperous business failed during the Reagan years, and then they ended up declaring bankruptcy. I had Christmases where I got everything I wanted, and at least one where I got nothing. They were good people and did the best they could. They never blamed the government, or Reagan's policies. Politics was not spoken about, but I was taught what was right and wrong.

In my own life, I've worked in almost every kind of "Joe Job" imaginable. Fast food, factories, delivery truck driver, and now work in a call center (click here for that blog). As long as I have voted, I have voted Republican, because of their stance on certain social and military issues. But I am starting to have my doubts lately, if they are the party that really has a plan to help the working poor. Tax cuts can't be the answer for all of our society's problems.

I think the fact that I have been indoctrinated in the Christian Right, and am trying to find the truth beyond the party line seems like a good foundation.

Thanks for reading.

I will follow your thoughts on this with interest as I come at it wishing for a more right-wing government. I'm Canadian and that is a very socialist, liberal-thinking government and I look at the US with a bit of envy.

I appreciate your thoughts here, but I don't think the answers are as simple as changing your political party alliances.

I am republican mainly because I disagree with too many foundational issues held dear by the democratic party.

I guess we'd be considered working middle class, my dh, sons and I. We are deep in debt, mostly due to dh changing jobs and my medical bills, which are never covered enough to outweigh the cost of insurance. By the way, I no longer have insurance on myself since to add me, with my long history of illness, raises my dh's premiums by $80+ per WEEK. And of course, taxes eat a huge portion of dh's income. Always.

The republican party isn't perfect, just the same way we as humans aren't perfect, therefore NO party is perfect. You can't expect perfection. It's not going to happen in this life.

But you can weigh the issues and discern who stands with your way of thinking and who doesn't.

I can't put my confidence in someone who aligns him/herself with a pro-abortion, pro-homosexual, pro-big-government, anti-marriage and anti-parental-rights group. Therefore, my choice is clear. It may not be a perfect choice, but it is one that will allow me to sleep at night.

I'll be checking back to read here.

Blessings--

I could not agree with your thoughts more. The social values of the the republican party align themselves with the moral values of Evangelical Christianity. But the values of fairness to the poor and equal treatment and justice are not represented as they should be.

I'm not trying to make counsel everyone to change parties. I'm seeking the truth, and trying to question those things taken for granted.
I want the republicans to not take Christians for granted, I want to stop demonizing the entire Democratic platform as all evil. In canonizing the Republicans, we have alienated the democratic party from even reaching out to evangelicals.

Its a tall order, and could be a jousting at windmills..thats ok.

Very well put, AC. Then we agree. *grin* No party could possibly be perfect because they are all comprised of fallible human beings.
This will be an interesting read.
Blessings in your pursuit!

Although I've been a conservative Republican and evangleical for decades now, the Christian Right drives me nutso. I appreciate many of your thoughts as I say many of the same things about the poor on my blog. We of course will differ on some social problems...but that isn't offending me at all:::)
